Summer School is over and it’s time for a Road Trip!  Our journey takes us to Philippi, site of the first Christian Church in Europe, started by the apostle Paul.  Then, as now, people were longing for happiness.  In the years following the founding of the church, followers discovered that discipleship did not necessarily lead to being happy.  Life continued to be full of challenges and discouragements as well as joys.  On our Road Trip, we will find that life in this ancient church community sounds a lot like life today.  We’ll also discover Paul’s alternative to the elusive pursuit of happiness – JOY!

Philippians 1:1-30

God wastes nothing – even Paul’s suffering, and so Paul gives thanks that his suffering is an opportunity to witness for Christ.  In this he finds great Joy.  Where is God presenting us opportunities to experience great Joy?  Is it possible that God wants to use our difficulties and trials for His glory?  What words of hope and encouragement does Paul have for us?  Are they his words alone, or the words of Christ through Him?

Philippians 2:1-30

An amazing antidote to self-centeredness is serving.  Paul knows, and reminds us that unity in the church is not obtained by each person looking out for his/her own interests, but in the living out of selfless serving, which focuses our thoughts, energies and priorities outside of ourselves.  That is Jesus’ example, and it is our calling!

Philippians 3:1 - 4:1

Not knowing what to believe is an awful place to be.  When everything is up for grabs, our lives can become chaotic and our days full of stress and anxiety.  Paul reminds us of the ultimate truth of Jesus and His Word.  Today we explore the rich treasure of Absolute, ultimate truth as revealed to us in the Bible.

Philippians 4:2-23

When we consider God’s character, and the characteristics He has revealed to us, any potential listing simply must include Generosity.  John 3:16-17 reminds us that God is not only generous, but sacrificially so.  How are our lives transformed when we practice generosity?  And what does that mean for us as disciples of Christ?
