A Celebration of Freedom
Romans 6:1-23    John 8:31-36

We live in an amazing country where, this weekend, we celebrate independence.  In one of the most free societies in the history of the world, we have, among other rights and responsibilities, the right to freely exercise our religious beliefs.  Together with the right of peaceful assembly, we have the foundation of our ability to gather today.  This is huge and it is most appropriate to celebrate it.  Yet true freedom, as Jesus explains, is only found in the Father.  This freedom does not depend on what country or region we live in, or the governing documents people create.  It is God’s grace in action.

And the Answer is…
Romans  7:1-25    John 3:16-21

In the fast pace of today’s world, we want answers, and want them right away.  Computing has accustomed us to vast quantities of data being available with a few key strokes.  It also allows us to check multiple sources when we don’t get the answer we are looking for.  Scripture tells us, however that there are absolute truths and, among them, is that Jesus is the answer to our deepest longings and hopes.  He is the answer to our questions about eternal life and ultimate meaning.  There is no need for a second opinion, for Jesus is not an opinion!  He is the answer.

Some Things Never Change
Romans 8:1-11    John 14:15-18,23

God does nothing by accident without purpose.  When Jesus died and rose again – for you and me – God had a plan.  When He claimed us in the waters of Baptism, He had a plan.  When He feeds us at His Holy Meal, He has a plan.  When He gave us free will, to accept all of this or reject it, He had a plan.  His plan is that we should live in an eternal relationship with Him, and participate in His plan for the world.  God, and His plan, never changes.

The Power of Hope
Romans 8:12-25    John 1:6-18

Where shall we place our hope?  In our talents, skills and abilities?  In our relationships?  In our possessions?  All of these will, sooner or later, disappoint us.  There is one never-ending, never changing source of ultimate hope; Jesus.

Better Than Super Glue
Romans 8:26-39     John 16:25-33
We began this month celebrating freedom, and today we conclude our celebration as we celebrate the freedom that comes with our never-ending connection to the love of God in Jesus.  We are reminded that God’s love is bigger than circumstances that we may experience.  It is bigger than trials, hardships or challenges. Because we are inseparably connected to God’s love, we are free to live lives assurance, regardless of circumstances.
