JUNE 4 - JUNE 25
Myths, fables, old adages, folk lore, and tradition are but a few of the sources we all have as bases we have for knowledge we assume to be true.  Just like the TV show of the same name, we will be looking at four commonly held faith beliefs that have their roots in something other than Scripture, and uncovering the truth behind the myth.

Busting the Myth:
Faith is a Private Matter

Acts 2:1-21,  1 Corinthians 12:3b-13,
John 7:37-39

Truth:  Faith is personal, powerful and intimate, but it is not private. Private describes what I do not share – what I choose to keep to and for myself.  This is the very antithesis of the Christian life of faith.  We hear powerfully today of the gift of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit empowers the lives of believers for lives of faith and service.  There is virtually no record in scripture of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that does not lead to lives of faithful service.  Only the outright rejection of the Holy Spirit could change that, and would be anything but an act of faith.

Busting the Myth:
“Faith” is a Noun

Genesis 1:1 – 2:4a,  Matthew 28:16-20

Fact:  For Christians, Faith is a verb – an action.  Nouns are persons, places or things.  For faith to be a thing, it would have to be described as a precept or ideal – something to which we give intellectual assent.  To paraphrase Martin Luther: We are saved by faith apart from the works of law, but faith without works is not faith.

Busting the Myth:
Get Out of Jail Free

Romans 6:1b-11,  Matthew 10:24-39

Fact:  Life is not a Monopoly Game.  In that game, the "Get out of Jail Free" card allows the player to escape a particular circumstance (jail) and continue on with the game as before.  God’s gracious gift of salvation and eternal life is about us responding to that amazing gift by living as God’s new creation.  We do that imperfectly, and God is gracious to forgive.  But, as Paul explains to the Romans, sinning more so that grace may abound, misses the point entirely, and is a product of old-life thinking.

Busting the Myth:
Slavery Has Ended

Romans 6:12-23,  Matthew 10: 40-42

Fact:  Slavery/human trafficking is very real around the world, including in this country.  While it is true that institutional slavery has been abolished in the western world for more than a century, the reality of physical slavery is very real for many, many thousands of people around the world today.  There is another kind of slavery that is even more sinister and more pervasive.  This is the slavery of sin.  As Paul continues to teach the Romans, there will always be a dominant force in our lives to which we submit and give allegiance.  As Christians, we have given that allegiance to Jesus.
