A NEW SEASON

AUGUST 25 - SEPTEMBER 15, 2019
4 weeks

The calendar tells us that summer is almost over.  A new season is about to begin.  Here at St. Timothy, a new season is about to begin as well.  As we conclude our journey together with Pastor and Candice Johnson, we will focus our attention, and our worship, on four key teachings of our faith.  They are central to who we have been together, and will continue to be central to who we are and will be in the months and years ahead as we seek to live and grow as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

IT'S A GOOD DAY TO COME TO JESUS

Isaiah 58:9b-14    Hebrews 12:18-29
Luke 13:10-17

SUMMARY
Today’s Gospel story is of a crippled woman who is touched and healed as only Jesus can do.  Those around her thought the time was not right, since it is the Sabbath.  Jesus, however reminds them (and us) that there is never a better time than right now to be touched by the healing power of Christ’s touch.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, IT'S NOT ABOUT ME?

Proverbs 25:6-7    Hebrews 13:1-8,15-16     Luke 14:1,7-14

SUMMARY
For the second time in as many weeks, Jesus is teaching and touching lives on the Sabbath.  And rightly so, because the Sabbath is about the Lord, not ourselves.  His teaching today reminds us of how easy it is to turn almost any situation into one that is both about us and beneficial for us. Jesus’ clear teaching is that His work is best accomplished when we get ourselves out of the way.

TRADING GOOD FOR BEST

Deuteronomy 30:15-20    Philemon 1:1-21    Luke 14:25-33

SUMMARY
We sometimes have an unspoken expectation of how life is supposed to work.  Good people have good things happen to them, and good people are rewarded.  So, we have a hard time understanding why bad things happen to good people.  Jesus stands all of this thinking on its head by teaching that following Him, above all else is the ultimate value.  Good things, by temporal standards, cannot compare to the immeasurable value of following Jesus.

OUR HOPE IN JESUS

Exodus 32:7-14    1 Timothy 1:12-17
Luke 15:1-10

SUMMARY
We, too, are stiff-necked people.  We live outside of God’s perfect plan for us.  We miss the mark – every day.  We are sinners, in need of forgiveness and reconciliation.  Out of an abundance of love, our Lord reaches out to us, all of us and each of us.  He welcomes us sinners and eats with us.  Today we once again celebrate this amazing truth that has drawn us together at the foot of the cross for 23 years.  Our circumstances and locations may change, but the mission remains unchanged – be a disciple, make a disciple for Jesus.  (Matt 28:16-20)
